Region 20 Names January Athletes of the Month

Congratulations to the Region 20 Players of the Month for January, 2023. NJCAA Region 20 honored nine student-athletes from eight different member institutions who had standout performances in the month of January, 2023. 

Men's Basketball Division I: Tekao Carpenter, Fr., G, Allegany

Carpenter averaged 20.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in January with a pair of 30-point games and a 20-point game in January. One of Carpenter's two double doubles came against Division I Harcum, where he scored 35 points on 54% shooting to go with 10 boards. 

Women's Basketball Division I: Deaisjah Somerville, So., G, Harford

Somerville averaged 18.6 points per game in January, scoring over 20 in three of the five contests. She averaged 7.4 rebounds per game and recorded a pair of double-doubles. She had 25 points and 10 boards against Hagerstown and 22 points to go with 12 steals against Union County. 

Co-Men's Basketball Division II: Andrew Mills, Fr., F, Howard

Mills filled the stats sheet with 17 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.2 blocks, and two steals per game in January as the Dragons faced five nationally-ranked teams in the month. Mills led the Dragons to three straight wins including a 20-point performance in an upset victory over NJCAA D2 No. 12 Sullivan County on the road. He scored at least 15 points in five of six games and pulled down double digit rebounds in four of six games all while recording multiple blocks in every game of the month.

Co-Men's Basketball Division II: Malik Witherspoon, Fr., F, Frederick

Witherspoon had an explosive January averaging 17.7 points and 17.8 rebounds per game

for the month. He recorded back-to-back 20+ point/20+ rebound games on back-to-back days, picking up 21 points and 21 boards at Delaware Tech on January 24th before following with 22 points and 20 rebounds at home against Harford the very next day. Witherspoon shot 44.2% from the floor in the month with five double-doubles.  

Women's Basketball Division II: Kendall Moxey, Chesapeake

Moxey averaged 15 points and 11.3 rebounds per game in January, shooting 49.6% from the floor. She recorded six double-doubles in eight games, including a 23-point, 11-rebound effort against Harford as the Skipjacks closed out the month on a four-game win streak. 

Men's Basketball Division III: Kevaughn Price, Butler

Price averaged 24 points and eight rebounds per game to lead the Pioneers to a 6-1 January record. He scored a season-high 31 points against CCAC and had two double-doubles. On the road against Division II Potomac State, Price sank the game-winning three-pointer to cap a 26-point night. Butler closed out January on a five-game win streak. 

Women's Basketball Division III: Aslyn Pry, Butler

Pry had six double-doubles in seven games in January, averaging 19.9 points and 15.6 rebounds per game during the month. She scored 23+ points on four occasions and pulled down 15+ rebounds five times. Four times she recorded five or more blocks and dished seven assists in three games. Pry had a monstrous performance against CCAC on January 18th scoring 38 points, grabbing 24 rebounds, dishing out eight assists and collecting five blocked shots. 

Men's Bowling: Nicholas Johnson, CCAC

Johnson opened the season with the highest scored series in CCAC history on January 13 with a 768 (255,257,256). In 12 games bowled in January, Johnson averaged 222.5 and was the top individual finisher in two of four matches in the month. 

Women's Bowling: Ashleigh Walker, Westmoreland

Walker was the top individual performer in all three of her matches in January. In a home match on January 27, Walker bowled her high series of 633, including her season-high game of 233. Walker leads the WPCC with a 184 average.
